EMDR Treatment in Denver and Across Colorado

EMDR is the acronym for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.  It is a specific type of therapy that helps lessen the present-day impact of past experiences, thought patterns, and other distressing internal material.

Extensive research has shown EMDR to be an effective treatment, with most research dedicated to trauma.  One study showed EMDR to be more effective in treating trauma compared with Prozac (Van der Kolk et.al., 2007).

Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR Treatment

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions about what to expect, especially when you’re beginning something like EMDR therapy. We’ve compiled some of the most common questions here:

Who does it help? EMDR for anxiety, trauma and more.

EMDR has been shown to help people who have experienced trauma, stressful events, or persistent anxiety/depression.  It can help others, but these are the treatment areas we can target at Heart Wild Therapy at our in-person location in Denver or online throughout Colorado.

How does EMDR counseling work?

It works by gently bringing the targeted material to mind, and pairing it with bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements that cross the center plane of the body). These movements are regulating for the nervous system and allow the level of disturbance to decrease.  In my office, I have a light bar that has a moving light that moves left to right that you follow with your eyes.  We can also try headphones with an alternating tone or vibrating handheld devices. For virtual sessions, I typically use my hand across the screen.

Does it work if the EMDR treatment sessions are conducted virtually?

Yes!  Absolutely.  I have specific training for offering EMDR virtually, and clients are reporting similar results.  It’s best if you have a private space to do your session in without any disturbances and a desktop computer (but we can work with your preferred device)!

How long does EMDR treatment take to work?

It depends.  Some people who have one isolated incident of trauma can process material in just a few sessions.  Some people have gone through complex events over many years, in which case it could take a year or longer to target all of the material with EMDR.  However, we can talk about the best length of treatment for you.
